Franklin D. Roosevelt-Cecil Perkerson Post 186
The mission of the Greenville American Legion is to create a safe, welcoming space where every veteran is reached and supported, while also strengthening ties with the community it serves. Located on 48 acres with a six-acre pond, the post offers opportunities for connection, healing, and growth through programs like trauma recovery classes, community volunteer projects, and the national “Be the One” initiative to prevent veteran suicide.
Membership is open to veterans, Auxiliary members, Sons of the American Legion, and Legion Riders, ensuring inclusivity and unity across generations. With 74 active members, the post remains a nonprofit dedicated to local impact, sustaining itself through rentals and a modest lifetime membership fee that keeps resources within Greenville. Guided by a deep dedication to veterans and their families, the Greenville American Legion is committed not only to honoring service but also to building stronger community bonds and a lasting legacy of support.
Leading the Greenville American Legion 186 post is Tom Miller, a former combat medic, he has been a member for 27 years. His heart for veterans drives the mission forward, drawing from his own experience and the American Legion’s long history of shaping programs that change lives.
From championing the GI Bill, to helping secure disability benefits for veterans, to lending a voice in Congress, the Legion has been at the forefront of advocacy. Even beyond military support, the Legion once stepped in to sustain organizations like the American Heart Association in the 1950s, proving its impact reaches far into the community. Under Miller’s leadership, Greenville’s post continues that legacy of service and innovation as well as prioritizing a strong relationship with the community, advocating for more community connection via access to the legion post and events.
