Celebrating Service and Community: The Meriwether County Rotary Club at the Cotton Fair

The Meriwether County Rotary Club, chartered on May 9, 1947, and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Columbus, has long been a pillar of service in our community. With 28 dedicated members, the club embodies the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self,” taking meaningful action to improve the lives of those around them.

The club’s efforts have earned them the prestigious Rotary Club of the Year title for 2024-2025 in Category 1, out of 68 clubs. This award recognizes excellence in membership growth, impactful service projects, and generous contributions to the Rotary Foundation. Additionally, the Meriwether County Rotary Club was honored with the Rotary Zone 33/34 Excellence in Public Image Coordination (EPIC) award, highlighting their ability to showcase the transformative impact of Rotary work in the community.

A central part of their community engagement is the Cotton Fair, the club’s primary fundraiser. Selling  classic fair treats like candy apples and foot-long hotdogs ensures resources to continue the club’s dedication to community connection and enrichment. Funds raised through the fair support a wide range of initiatives, including scholarships, literacy programs, Boys and Girls Club activities, the 31 Project, and local arts programs. Beyond fundraising, the club actively supports community events such as the Dorcas Ministry Community Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Student hosting, and the PARC program focused on prevention and responsibility.

Looking through the club’s scrapbooks and photos, one can see a history filled with service, camaraderie, and a commitment to bettering Meriwether County. The Meriwether County Rotary Club continues to serve as a model of how dedicated people can create meaningful change, enriching lives and strengthening communities with every project and every event.
